Genocide. Torture. Slavery. Poverty. Rape. Murder. Abuse. How much do these words weigh in your heart? They weigh heavy in mine. Some days reading the paper makes my eyes blur and my heart cry. Some times I cannot comprehend the evils of mankind and our ability to do such injustice to our own people. It disgusts me.
But I also refuse to believe that genuinely good people no longer exist. Call me naive but I believe there is good in every person. I sincerely believe that they exist, not because of hidden agendas or underlying intentions, but because they just do. These are the people who inspire the rest of us to be like them. They inspire me to believe that small steps can lead to bigger steps.
I believe in people like Blake Mycoskie and his movement.
One for One
TOMS Shoes was founded on a simple premise: For every pair you purchase, TOMS will give a pair of shoes to a child in need. One for One. Using the purchasing power of individuals to benefit the greater good is what we're all about.
Our Story
In 2006 an American traveler, Blake Mycoskie, befriended children in Argentina and found they had no shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to help, he created a company that would match every pair of shoes sold with a pair given to a child in need. One for One. Blake returned to Argentina with a group of family, friends and staff later that year with 10,000 pairs of shoes made possible by caring TOMS customers.
Since our beginning, TOMS has given over 140,000* pairs of shoes to children in need through the One for One model. Because of your support, TOMS plans to give over 300,000 pairs of shoes to children in need around the world in 2009.
Our ongoing community events and Shoe Drop Tours allow TOMS supporters and enthusiasts to be part of our One for One movement. Join us.
Why shoes?
Most children in developing countries grow up barefoot. Whether at play, doing chores or just getting around, these children are at risk.
Walking is often the primary mode of transportation in developing countries. Children can walk for miles to get food, water, shelter and medical help. Wearing shoes literally enables them to walk distances that aren't possible barefoot.
Wearing shoes prevents feet from getting cuts and sores on unsafe roads and from contaminated soil. Not only are these injuries painful, they also are dangerous when wounds become infected. The leading cause of disease in developing countries is soil-transmitted parasites which penetrate the skin through open sores. Wearing shoes can prevent this and the risk of amputation.
Many times children can't attend school barefoot because shoes are a required part of their uniform. If they don't have shoes, they don't go to school. If they don't receive an education, they don't have the opportunity to realize their potential.
There is one simple solution...SHOES.
Of the planet's six billion people, four billion live in conditions inconceivable to many. Lets take a step towards a better tomorrow.
So instead of buying another bottle of liquor, another pair of stilettos, another shirt or another cell phone, how about a pair of TOMS Shoes? And if you're a little strapped for cash then tell someone about Blake and his mission.
I know asking for recommendations goes against Xanga etiquette but spreading the word via email, Twitter, Facebook or any other medium will do just as well. And it's just as important.
I love the idea. It's so simple and very...universal.
Great cause and easy to do!
I've heard about this guy and his cause. I think it's a great idea!
I'm glad you did this post. I've seen something about this guy recently. Yes, he will make a profit, but still, this program is so admirable!
Thanks!
Great cause!
Nice philanthropy work. Shoes are always needed. Crocs too donate shoes like this.
I love TOM's shoes and their whole ideology. My friends at school promotes them at a lot. SK loves the idea too, so she buys a pair every month then donates the shoes to a help the needy charity foundation in her building. Good stuff for spreading great causes. Keep it up! =)
Blake Mycoskie spoke at my school and he was just amazing. I definitely support his cause and am planning to buy my second pair of shoes from TOMs soon. :)
@shake_things_up - I read about him in an advertising magazine a while back. And then the other day, I saw him in an AT&T commercial. I guess he got them to sponsor them or something.
@WintersWitch - Oh, I didn't know that. Kudos to Cocks too! Thanks for stopping by.
@human_element - Aww...she's such a sweetheart. It's a wonderful thing she's doing. I hope you're chipping in to mister!
@lighthours - Speaking at schools is a great way to spread the word. I'm really glad he's inspiring the younger generations to be a part of the global community. I'm trying to convince my younger sister to buy her first pair.
interesting, will check out that site!
Thanks for sharing about this! Wonderful idea!
It is so nice you are willing to put yourself into this cause.
really? you can't understand mankind's ability to be terrible? makes the most sense to me. but I support this cause. yey for the children~ also, if anyone's interested, try the x-mas shoebox with Samaritan's Purse. I do that every year and I always look forward to it. :]
I am going to buy a pair of TOMS shoes tomorrow. Thanks for enlightening us.
I don't wear the style of shoes he sells, but it's a great idea. Hopefully more people will start doing business like this.
Such matters are important since we as humans naturally value life over anything else, but I do not find it surprising that "Genocide. Torture. Slavery. Poverty. Rape. Murder. Abuse" exists, you can't prevent people from being human, to be drive by emotion, to value their own lives, to seek pleasure, to understand the things that they do not understand, to fear that which they do not understand. Genocide. Torture. Slavery. Poverty. Rape. Murder. Abuse are only a minuscule amount of side effects to being human, thats why not everyone has it, not even most people ^.^
I was wondering, are the shoes that TOM's sell, sweatshop free? In my research, I haven't found a clear answer on this.
Someone remarked that he shut down manufacturing in Argentina and moved it to China... just wondering if you knew of any more recent news about the integrity of this business.
cheers!
I love TOMS shoes!!! Most of my friends have them and as soon as I can I'm getting my own pair!
How is it living in the city?
I'll check it out. Thanks for the post.
Those are some cute shoes and boots too!
hiiiiiiiiii looking cute n preety..........
I only give to people who don't make a profit, and I don't claim it on my taxes because I've never seen the point in being paid back when you're supposed to be losing money for a cause -- this makes no sense. Neither does this shoe-thing. I t looks like a scam.
